How the United States’ situation is unique in history

No, it’s nothing to do with “American Exceptionalism”

Here’s why our situation is unique: never in the history of the world (as far as I know) has a ruling oligarchy voluntarily chosen to give up power and share that power with the minority.

In the case here in the United States, we are far closer to that point than anywhere else in the world.

Here, the oligarchy is White and Christian (and also male until 1921 when women were “granted” — oh, how benevolent of the menfolk! — the right to vote). This is also the case with most of the other nations which were colonialist overlords: they were and are White and Christian (they just happen to also constitute most of the wealthiest nations on Earth, gee, I wonder why?).

Looking at a list of the colonialist nations (somewhat in order chronologically of their empires and acquisitions) and the % of People of Color (POC) vs. White (who are 90%+ Christian in heritage if not actively practicing):

Portugal (colonized all or parts of 50 countries across the globe, including Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique): 94% Portuguese, 1.2% each of Brazilians, Black, mixed race and other Europeans. Ratio: 1:16

Spain (had some three dozen colonies, including Mexico, most Central and South American countries, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Phillipines): 47 million total, of which 5 million are foreign born; there are about 1.3 million of African descent in Spain. Ratio: 1:9?

Belgium (brutally administered colonies in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo): “1.3 million migrants have acquired Belgian citizenship (in recent decades)”, population of 11.5 million; 10 million counting Flemish and Walloon Belgians. Ratio: 1:8

Netherlands/Dutch Empire (colonies in Africa, India, China, and modern-day Indonesia): Dutch and other European ~87%, Turkish 2.4%, Moroccan 2.3%, Indonesian 2.1%, Surinamese 2%, “other” ~3.7%. Ratio: 1:7

Britain (over 65 countries have declared independence from Britain; Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are about all they have left other than a few islands, and those regions may well declare independence post-Brexit): 87% “White British”. Ratio: 1:7

France (mostly in the New World and Africa, totaling more than 20 modern nations): 85% White European. Ratio: 1:7

Italy (not going back as far as Rome LOL; colonized or more properly conquered by war, 10 countries including Albania, Libya, Ethiopia, and Somalia): “92% ethnic Italian — often interpreted in practical terms as white”. Ratio: 1:12

Germany (besides obvious issues related to WWI and WWII, Germany also had colonies or dominion over all or parts of present-day Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Cameroon, and Ghana in Africa, numerous Pacific islands, and several port cities in China): not much in the way of statistics, as Germany does not keep records of racial statistics (!), but there appear to be 1% Black, 1% Syrian, and perhaps 9% “other” which includes Russian, Croatian, Turkish, and others, presumably at least a few Asians? Ratio: 1/9?

In comparison with these European colonialist nations, with ratios ranging from 7-to-1 to 16-to-1, the United States has a ratio of White folks to POC, currently, of 3-to-2 (59.7% White (non-Hispanic) in 2020; down to 55.8% by 2030; and down to 49.7 by 2045!).

In 1950, just under 90% of the US was White non-Hispanic; folks born then, who are now 70 years old (and who vote, and are likely to live for another 10 or 20 years), old White folks, see a totally different world coming to be. Many of these older folks see these “others” as a threat, even as the enemy. And of course we have an active hatred of POC by those on the Far Right, the “militiamen”, those who believe POC are subhuman, with which the less vociferous have allied themselves.

Similar pressures on race and immigration are present in all of these European colonialist nations, but only in the US have Whites lost dominance in numbers to a point where, soon, they will become the minority. In no other country are they being forced to face things like we are here in the United States. So we get to “go first”. We MUST go first. Liberals welcome the change, but conservatives — the religious, the rich, the powerful, those who support The Establishment, and yes, the racist— fear this: they call it The Great Replacement.

One way or another, this is the end of colonialism, but it may coincide with — and cause — the end of the world. If those in the Establishment — the conservatives who wish to “conserve” their oligarchy — are not willing to share power and provide racial justice, then it will also be the end of civilization: we the people will not go quietly into ANY goodnight.
